The crucial role of representation in buying my first home.

Today, I want to share the story of buying my first house. This real estate experience of ours taught us how critical it was to have the right representation.

A year after getting married, my young family and I sought advice from a lifelong friend who happened to be a Realtor. He made it clear that he represented the seller, not us. However, he didn’t explain the implications. As we progressed, he wouldn’t advise on the offer or recommend an inspector. We also had to navigate financing independently.

“If you’re buying or selling, make sure to hire a professional who truly represents your interests.”

After moving in, we discovered issues like a malfunctioning water heater, which should have been caught in an inspection. Months later, we found out about a termite infestation mentioned in the seller’s disclosure. In the following year and a half, we dealt with a failing air handler and a rotted-out house due to water damage.

It was a rollercoaster of a ride, and the lesson we learned from that experience is that it is crucial to understand the importance of representation in real estate transactions. If you’re buying or selling, make sure to hire a professional who truly represents your interests.
